Founder-Style Leadership
But after reading many of the subsequent pieces, and talking to many product teams and product leaders about this concept, I’m convinced that most people have been missing the real point of this critically important topic.
Empowered Product Teams
What are the skills and techniques used by the best product teams at the best product companies to solve hard technology problems? I love this topic, and between the various risks (value, usability, feasibility, and viability), the various forms of prototypes for tackling these risks, and the many qualitative and quantitative techniques for testing these prototypes, there is so much to say.
Team Autonomy and AI
Through these discussions, one thing I’ve learned is that when it comes to product teams, there’s considerable confusion between the two related, but distinct, concepts of empowerment and autonomy. In this article, I’d like to clarify these two concepts, and then discuss some of the less obvious implications of AI when it comes to team autonomy, and why I think this is very profound, yet does not seem to be discussed much.

Disruption and Denial

The Internet was essentially a new platform, and a large part of my job (I had the role of VP Platform and Tools for Netscape Communications at the time), was to evangelize this new platform to developers and product companies, so that they could start building the new generation of connected products. At the time, the single most common objection I would get is

Creating Intelligent Products

“Applying AI to the software development process is a major research topic. There is tremendous potential for improving the productivity of the programmer, the quality of the resulting code, and the ability to maintain and enhance applications…we are working on intelligent programming environments that help users assess the impact of potential modifications, determine
